Can you fit 3 car seats in a jeep?
This Car Seat Check was written in June 2018 about the 2019 Jeep Cherokee and was published online. This year’s Jeep Cherokee hasn’t changed that much in terms of its basic features. You can see what’s new for 2020 or compare the models.
It is no secret that Jeep’s new Cherokee compact SUV, introduced for 2014, was well received by the critics – to put it mildly. Automaker has decided to tone things down a bit for 2019, making it more appealing to a wider audience.
On the inside, caregivers with kids in car seats will also find many things to like, from the exposed Latch anchors to the ample leg room.
The seats we use for the Car Seat Check are the Graco Snug Ride Classic Connect 30 infant-safety seat, the Britax Marathon convertible seat, as well as the Graco Turbo Booster seat. There is a special seat adjustment for a driver with a height of 6 feet and a shorter passenger with a height of 5 feet.
In the second row of the vehicle, there is room for three child seats. As the booster seat is installed behind the driver’s seat, the infant seat is also installed behind the front passenger seat, and the convertible seat is located behind the front passenger seat.
Also, we installed the forward-facing convertible in the middle seat of the second row with booster and infant seats in the outboard seats to see if three car seats would fit; a child in the booster seat should be able to reach the seat belt buckle while sitting in the seat.
The booster seat and the forward-facing convertible are installed in the third row if there is one. To learn how we conduct our Car Seat Checks.
You should also keep in mind that parents can use either the Latch system or a seat belt to install their child’s car seat, and that Latch anchors have a weight limit of 65 pounds, which includes the weight of the child as well as the weight of the seat itself.
There is plenty of room for a car seat and a child, and it doesn’t have an impact on legroom for the driver or front passenger.
It is easy to find and tether the anchors which are located on the back of the car seat. I had no problems with the head restraint or contouring of the seats when installing this car seat. Installation was simple and the third row is very easily accessible.
It was also honored to mention that the Jeep Cherokee was included in my top-rated list of the safest SUVs for 2015, thanks to its intrusion-resistant frame design.
The biggest failing of the Jeep Cherokee from a safety standpoint is currently its marginal small overlap score. Nevertheless, Jeep will undoubtedly address this as soon as it becomes available.
It was my goal to spend the weekend testing car seats in order to determine which ones I could and couldn’t fit three across in a new (KL) Jeep Cherokee that I borrowed from my friend.
Since there are still so many older (1996 XJ) Cherokees on the road, I also borrowed an older (96 XJ) Cherokee to see how that would fare in the three-day trip across the country. The following are some tips and information on how to keep your child safe in a car seat before we get into what I found.
